The Nikitsky Botanical Gardens – National Scientific Center (NBG – NSC) and the National Institute for Vine and Wine “Magarach” (NIVV “Magarach”) together with the Ukrainian Vavilov Society of Geneticists and Breeders (UVS GB) are pleased to invite you to attend the International Conference «Actual Problems of Applied Genetics, Breeding and Biotechnology of Plants» in commemoration of the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin and the 200th anniversary of Nikitsky Botanical Gardens, which will be taken place in Yalta (Crimea, Ukraine) on November 3-6, 2009.

The programme topics:
1. Problems of applied plant genetic
- conservation, maintenance and use of plant genetic resources (ornamental, fruit, berry (including grapevine), aromatic, medicinal and other crops);
- genetic aspects of variation in natural and artificial populations;
- molecular aspects of plant genetics;
2. Problems of applied plant breeding
- theory of selection in modern breeding;
- formation of breeding programmes and practical obtained results;
3. Problems of applied plant biotechnology
- tissue culture methods application in introduction, breeding and propagation of cultivated plants;
- creation of plant collections in vitro (medium-term conservation and cryopreservation of plant germplasm )
- modern biotechnologies (GMOs, biological safety, etc.)

A number of interesting events are being planned as part of the Conference, including tours of the South Coast of the Crimea and the Nikitsky Botanical Gardens, with the impressive annual show “A Ball of Chrysanthemums”, and a testing of super Crimea wines at the Institute “Magarach”.

The working languages of the Conference – Ukrainian, Russian and English.
Simultaneous interpretation and translation services may be arranged.

Lectures and reports will be 15-30 min each. Poster sessions are also envisaged.

Those willing to register as participants are welcome to send the filled-in registration form as e-mail attachment in RTF format to in_vitro@ukr.net by May 1, 2009. The initial(s) and the name of the first author will be the name of the e-mail attachment (registration form),  e. g. smith_j.rtf.  Abstracts will be published as a special edition. Papers will be published in the Bulletin of the NBG – NSC) and in the Bulletin of the UVS GB. Abstracts will be sent as files named according to the following model: abstract_smith_j.rtf to in_vitro@ukr.net by May 1, 2009. The full texts of papers will be sent as files named according to the same model: paper_smith_j.rtf to in_vitro@ukr.net by June 15, 2009.   Abstracts and papers will be published provided preliminary payment.

Presentation of abstracts:
Abstracts in English will be exclusively electronic, using Word 97-2003 (Times New Roman 14, alignment on the width of the page, single spaced), and limited to one page (A4 format; margins top, bottom, left, right 2.5 cm). The structure of abstracts will be as follows: the title (in capitals), the authors (first names and names, affiliation and postal and electronic addresses in lower-case capitalized where appropriate, followed by an additional space), the text (no bold). No editing will be provided. Abstracts which contain many errors will be rejected.

 

Presentation of papers:
Papers will be typed on A4 format paper, using Word 97-2003 (Times New Roman 14; 1.5 spaced; no hyphens; no alignment on the width of the page; margins top, bottom, left, right 2.5 cm; no pagination) and limited to 8 pages, including all tables, figures and references.
Papers will consist of the following elements: general formulation of the problem in relation to important theoretical and practical tasks, analysis of recent studies and publications concerned with the problem on which the author’s research is based, specification of aspects to be investigated of the general problem to which aspects the author’s research is dedicated, determination of the goals of the research, presentation of the experiment, results and conclusions.
Papers will be structured as follows: the title (in bold capitals); the authors (first names and names in capitals, scientific degrees in lower-case italics capitalized where appropriate; affiliation, city and country in lower-case capitalized where appropriate), the text divided into the sections (in bold capitals, centered) “Introduction”, “Objects and methods of investigation”, “Results and discussion”, “Conclusions” and “References” (in alphabetical order). The tables will have the word “Table” in lower-case with the first letter capitalized and a consecutive number to the right on the page, followed by a centered caption in bold lower-case below using upper-case for the initial letter of the first word only, the text and the numerals of the tables in lower-case. The captions of the figures will be below the relevant figures, centered, in bold lower-case using upper-case for the initial letter of the first word only.  The figures and the diagrams will be sent as separate files in TIFF or JPEG format.  
The references should be presented as follows:

Scientific Latin names of plants (in italics, the author’s name is usual style, e. g. Quercus pubescens Willd.) will be used. When used repeatedly, the generic name of the taxon will be abbreviated and the author’s name will be omitted (Q. pubescens). If not preceded by the word “variety”, the names of varieties will be in single inverted commas as envisaged by the International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants, with initial capitals of all major words (the peach ‘Gold Jubilee’; the peach variety Gold Jubilee).

Summaries in English will be limited to ten lines on a separate sheet and structured as follows: the authors (first names and names in initial capitals and lower-case), the title (in capitals), the text, indication of the number of tables, figures and references (in lower case), the keywords (in lower case).
